8-year-old boy spends P100k on mobile games

Parenting is a tough but fulfilling task to take on. And like anything that we get into comes the lessons we learn along the way. Jay and and Julmar Grace Locsin shared a post dated January 6 about what happened recently when one of their twin boys purchased mobile games without asking permission from his parents.

Like most parents, their old phone was passed on to their sons to use. And most do not even think of resetting their phones, with most of their old phones still connected to their new phones. "Hubby's account is connected to Google Play because we sometimes rent good movies on YouTube," she explains on her post, adding that they allow their kids to have access to apps such as Super Book times, Messenger Kids, and War Robots.

Julmar was able to track down bank statements from their company Filipino Virtual Assistance Company's finance team and initially thought that their son spent P40,000 worth on mobile games in just two days. "He got some spanking because he downloaded more games without asking permission. When asked after, he reasoned that the old games were too easy for him and he thought all the downloads were free. He cried a lot after we talked about it and forgave him. He was very sorry (and was too cute with those irresistible eyes). We explained that they are worth MORE THAN all the money in the world but following rules is also a good life skill to abide."

The couple thought that everything was over, until they found out that the boy spent much more with a total of P100,000! Julmar updated her post by sharing tips on how to avoid situations like this, "Parental controls have been added and a password for purchases. Is finding out that the purchase is P100k changed our feelings for our kids? NOPE. Again, we know how our kids and our parenting more than anyone else. This is a complete mistake (he thought all the downloads are free). We trust them and they are responding to discipline with the fear of God in their hearts."

As for the amount that the child unknowingly spent, Julmar also shared that they filed for request to refund and are waiting for it to be reflected in their accounts.
