The appointment paper has been signed by the President, according to his spokesman Harry Roque.

"Mr. Aguirre served as Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary during the early years of the Duterte Administration. This bodes well in his new position to make the police service competent, effective, credible and responsive to our people's needs,” Roque said.

"Good luck to Mr. Aguirre in his present appointment,” he added.

Aguirre, a former classmate of Duterte in law school, was first appointed as justice secretary in 2016 but resigned from the post in April 2018.

Two other new appointees, meanwhile, took their oath of office before President Duterte on Monday, Jan. 11, in Malacañang.

New Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chair Benhur Abalos and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) board member Mark Lapid were sworn into office Monday before the President convened a Cabinet meeting at the Palace.

Roque confirmed on Monday the appointment of Abalos to take over the post left by the late chairman Danilo Lim.

"Atty. Abalos has the professional competence and experience to head MMDA having served as a local chief executive of Mandaluyong City for many years.   We wish Atty. Abalos all the best in his new assignment," he said.

Earlier, Roque confirmed the President signed the appointment of Lapid as member of the TIEZA board of directors. "Tourism is one of the most important sectors of our economy, and the appointment of Mr. Lapid, who is no stranger to TIEZA, augurs well in contributing to the recovery and growth of tourism, which has been affected by the pandemic," he said.
