Policewoman in trouble for indiscriminate firing during New Year’s Eve

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported Friday that the New Year celebration was generally peaceful in the country except for at least two cases of indiscriminate firing of firearms where one police officer was involved.

In an interview over GMA News, PNP spokesperson P/ Brig. Gen. ldebrandi Usana said a policewoman in Malabon was arrested for indiscriminate firing while in Dagupan a person was hit by a stray bullet.

"Pangkalahatan naging matahimik naman, wala pong masyadong naitala na kahit na anong untoward incident in relation sa celebration ng New Year (In general the (New Year) celebration was peaceful. There were a few cases of untoward incidents in relation to the New Year celebration),’’ Usana said.

Usana said that firecracker-related incidents were “not as many as those reported in the past years.’’

He noted that there was an indiscriminate firing incident dome by a policewoman in Malabon City while a stray bullet victim was also recorded.

Usana did not identify the policewoman involved in the indiscriminate firing incident but noted she will likely be dismissed from the service for her misdeeds.

The PNP spokesperson stressed that the policewoman will face stiff sanctions as no defense can exonerate her for the infraction except if it can be proven that she fired her gun in the performance of her sworn duty.

Regarding the stray bullet victim, Usana said the victim was hit in one of his legs and is now recuperating at home after seeking medical treatment.

Police operatives are now conducting a probe to determine where the bullet came from.

Usana explained that the slug will most likely be connected to forensic examination to unearth if the gunshot came from a registered firearm where the owner will be traced.
