The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) issued tips on keeping pets safe during New Year's Eve fireworks celebrations.
PAWS reminded the public that loud noises and flashing lights of fireworks can be frightening for pets.
The animal welfare group urged pet owners to postpone or set nighttime activity such as feeding, walking, or playtime with pets to an earlier time so that pets "are more or less exhausted and calm when the fireworks are set to go off."
PAWS also encouraged pet owners to create a "safe haven" for pets to hide out while fireworks are ongoing.
"Ensure that this area is enclosed through to prevent your pet from running away because of all the anxiety-inducing excitement. If possible, set up several pet havens for your pet so that they can choose which one feels most comfortable for them," PAWS said.
"Your pet's preferred safe haven may also be with you so you may need to miss out on all the New Year excitement yourself so you can be with your pet during this frightening time for him," it added.
The sound of radio or TV can also help mask the sound of fireworks. Spotify has a recommended playlist that helps calm pet anxiety, according to PAWS.
Pet owners are also asked to heed the following advice:
- Close the curtains or cover the windows to minimize the lights from the fireworks
- Make their home as escape-proof as possible
- Try an anti-anxiety wrap
- See a vet if the pet's anxiety becomes severe
Earlier, mayors in Metro Manila have banned the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices to avoid injuries and deaths ahead of the New Year celebration.
