Through the years: Filipino actors who played National Hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal

The country commemorates today, Dec. 30, the 124th death anniversary of our National Hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal. And as much as we wanted to know more and relive the life he lived, the closest thing we could get in achieving that is by watching these actors and their refined portrayals of Rizal. Here's a rundown:  

Alden Richards ("Ilustrado," 2014)

Directed by King Marc Gaco, Ilustrado was a 2014 Philippine TV Drama series based on the life's work and lifework of the Calamba Native hero, portrayed by Sta. Rosa, Laguna's "Pambansang Bae."

Rocco Nacino ("Pluma: Rizal, Ang Dakilang Manunulat," 2011)

Marking Rizal's 150th birthday, GMA News and Public Affairs aired this 6-part documentary series.

Jericho Rosales ("Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo" 2014)

Non-movie goers would be scratching their heads upon knowing that the Kapamilya Actor played Jose Rizal on a film about Andres Bonifacio.

Allan Paule (Sisa, 2008)

Allan Paule played the role of Jose Rizal in the 2008 indie film "Sisa" by CJ Andaluz and Frank Rivera. Jodi Sta. Maria was in the lead role in a film about one of Rizal's iconic fictional characters in his novel Noli Me Tangere.

Joel Torre ("Bayaning Third World," 2000)

"Bayaning Third World" offers a different style of depicting Jose Rizal's story in a style of a black and white mockumentary film that succeeded in making the viewers re-think about the mysteries about Jose Rizal's life and death.

Cesar Montano ("José Rizal" 1998)

Last but definitely not the Arguably the most accurate portrayal of Jose Rizal's legacy, Cesar Montano was the lead actor on Marilou Diaz-Abaya's masterpiece, it was critically acclaimed for its accuracy, cinematography and engaging storytelling that is rightfully so for it is one of the most expensive Filipino Film ever made, with a whopping 80 million budget back in 1998.
