Lt. Col. Rey Alvarado, 72nd Infantry Battalion (72nd IB) commander, said alias Macoy, 30, secretary of an NPA-Guerilla Front, and his wife known as Pop, 26, turned themselves in amid the demoralization among the ranks in the Leftist group, which has been plagued by the waning support from its mass base.

He said the surrenderers also yielded a 9mm Glock pistol and a .40 caliber Armscor pistol.

The NPA surrenderers also said they opted to surrender to reunite with their families as they have been on the run from government forces out to hunt them down while they have been holed out in their mountain lair.

Alvarado said the NPA surrenderers also led the 72nd IB troopers in the recovery of an arms cache being maintained by NPA rebels in the remote village in Magpet town that resulted in the seizure of two -5.56 M-16 rifles.

He said the NPA surrenderers will be enlisted into the Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP) wherein they will be provided with livelihood assistance by the local government of Magpet.
