Intel operative shoots self in Negros Occ.

A police sergeant died when he allegedly shot himself during a heated argument with his assets in Cadiz City in Negros Occidental.

Col. Roger James Brillantes, director of the Regional Internal Affairs Service (RIAS) in Western Visayas, said the service firearm of Staff Sgt. Bernie Sales went off while he was being pacified by one of the assets during their meeting in Barangay Zone 4 on Thursday night.

Brillantes said lawyer Alfegar Triambulo, director of the Internal Affairs Service (IAS), already ordered that the incident be thoroughly investigated.

“We conducted an investigation on the incident based on the initial report of illegal discharge of firearms,” said Brillantes.

Sales, 37, was an intelligence operative of the Sagay City Police Station in Negros Occidental.

On Thursday night, he met with his three assets but their discussion resulted in a heated argument. During the argument, Sales reportedly drew his gun but he was asked by one of the assets to calm down.

But Sales allegedly went on which forced the female asset to try to grab the gun from him. The gun then went off and hit Sales. He was immediately taken to the hospital but was declared dead.

Brillantes said they are investigating the case to determine if there was a foul play behind Sales' death.
