Three no-fuss houseplants for young plant parents

It doesn't have to complicated to bring a plant into your life

If you haven't been living under a rock, you have probably heard the seen plantita on social media. Filipinos have been turning to plants to soothe them through these stressful times. Maybe it is because they can represent the beauty of life, or maybe it is just because they can't talk back or make any sort of sound. Either way, they are a calming presence to have in the home. And they aren't just for the titas and titos of the Philippines.

"The pandemic has caused us to remain in isolation from our friends and families, which has naturally brought on stress and anxiety for many," says Alia San Diego, a fresh college graduate and the founder of the Edenist Plant Shop. "I think young people can deal with this new normal by fostering new relationships with houseplants."

"I always refer to my customers as 'plant parents' because it conveys a kinship with their plants, as opposed to treating them as decorations," she continues. "Not only is it extremely rewarding to see your plants grow, but keeping plants indoors also improves air quality, increases productivity, and reduces stress."

Of course, all of that only works if the plant doesn't add additional stress to our lives. At the end of the day, a plant is a living organism that needs to be properly cared for. But don't let that scare you from getting (or giving, it is nearing Christmas after all) a plant.

Manila Bulletin Lifestyle talked to Alia and asked her what prospective plant parents should consider if they are hesitant to take on too much responsibility. Scroll through to check out the top three no-fuss houseplants that will make it easy to bring life into your home:

For new plant parents...

Alia: If you're new to plant parenthood, or are simply looking for a no-fuss houseplant, the snake plant is a good choice. Snake plants are hardy and are adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions.

For forgetful plant parents...

Alia: This plant is practically indestructible–a great choice for the forgetful plant owner. This hardy plant requires very little water and grows well in any light, except direct sunlight.

For plant parents who are already parents to a furry baby...

Alia: The bird's nest fern is a great low-light houseplant. Plant parents with pets don't have to worry since these are considered non-toxic.
