This, after a steel girder from a portion of the on-going project fell on vehicles passing on the East Service Road in Muntinlupa City, resulting in the death of one person and serious injuries to four others.

“With the construction of the Skyway extension in the Muntinlupa area still ongoing, Muntinlupeños should be assured and guaranteed that this will never happen again,” Biazon said in a press statement.

Biazon, a senior member of the House Committee on Public Order and Safety, called for an “urgent, indepth “investigation into the incident, saying that probers must determine the cause of the “crane’s malfunction, which led to the crash of the Skyway steel girders.”

“To a layman’s observation, it appears to be a preventable accident. Definitely, the contractor will have to be held accountable to the loss of life, limb, and property,” he said.

He added:  “We do not want to live under threat of being killed by falling debris and equipment. Let not the Skyway become a highway to heaven.”

A number of mishaps have already been recorded during construction of flyovers in the country.

In 2018, a portion of the four-lane flyover being constructed in Imus City, Cavite collapsed.  The accident, that damaged heavy equipment owned by the contractor, happened while beams were being lifted by a crane.

A year earlier, steel bars from the Skyway project on the portion of the South Super Highway came crashing into the ground.
