Number of COVID-19 cases in Eastern Visayas surpasses 8,000-mark


TACLOBAN CITY – The number of coronavirus cases reported in Eastern Visayas surpassed the 8,000-mark on Tuesday, November 17, after 99 more infections were recorded.

The Department of Health (DOH) Eastern Visayas said the region’s total number of COVID-19 cases has reached 8,017, but with only 662 active cases, or 8.26 percent of the total.

Out of 1,216 laboratory samples tested in two COVID-19 laboratories in the region, 99 tested positive for the virus.

Northern Samar logged the most number of cases with 29 new infections. Its capital town Catarman accounted for nine new cases, who were all close contacts of a known positive case; Lavezares town had seven, the municipality of Pambujan had five, two each in Catubig and Lope de Vega, and one each in Allen, Bobon, San Isidro, and Silvino Lobos.

Eastern Samar had 42 new cases with 15 coming from Guiuan town, nine from Salcedo, seven from Balangiga, five from Mercedes, two from Quinapondan, and one each from General Macarthur, Hernani-1, Lawaan, and San Julian.

Samar had 12 fresh cases coming from Calbayog City (6), San Jorge (3), Basey (2), and Gandara.

San Francisco, Southern Leyte had one new case.

Tacloban City logged five new cases, three locally stranded individuals (LSIs) tested positive in Matag-ob town, three in Burauen, two in Palo, and one each in Baybay City and Jaro, Leyte.

Meanwhile, despite the continuous spike in the number of cases in the region, the total recoveries have been reported at 7,278 or 90.78 percent, with 77, or 0.96 percent, fatality.
