It’s the most wonderful time of the year...right? With social distancing in place, all of the usual Christmas celebrations are, for the most part, off-limits—no dinners out, no karaoke, and no pool parties.
But no more joy? We refuse that! There are still ways to celebrate, regardless of how far-flung the relatives or friends may be. Here are five quarantine-friendly virtual party options that you can easily pull off.
Throw a digital dance party
The more the party feels like a “real” party, the happier you will be. So get dressed up, invest in an affordable disco light (available in online stores), set up a private event on Zoom or any other virtual meeting platform with your loved ones, and livestream a D.J.’s set, so you’re all sharing the same music. The music will surely put everyone in the mood to groove.
Have the whole family make video cards
Although it’s safe to receive traditional cards, a video greeting is an even more interactive idea for us than a two-dimensional piece of paper. And you can’t go wrong with a straightforward video made on a phone camera. Jazz up your greetings by using different filters, too!
Organize a remote sleepover
Slumber parties never get old. Ask your relatives to join a video call and do all your favorite things together. Order each family member a sheet mask and the usual snacks that you go for. No sleepover is complete without a movie—download the Netflix party extension so you and your loved ones can watch Christmas movies in sync and chat about it.
Tee up a game night
There are lots of options for playing games online right now. A virtual holiday scavenger hunt is a fun way to spend time on a Zoom party. It takes about 15 minutes, and it will help increase engagement. A trivia game is a great option, too. Participants can answer using the chat feature or audibly via webcam. You could also incorporate the ‘raise hand’ button as a makeshift buzzer.
Host a virtual happy hour
Not only does an evening “event” help give the day structure, but seeing friendly faces can be a lifeline for people who miss their friends and loved ones. Make sure to keep your happy hour fairly intimate and settle on food and drinks. Keep the conversation light, and be a good listener.
