Seven people were rescued while one was reported missing after a yacht sank off Bauan in Batangas province on Monday morning due to Typhoon Quinta.
In an interview with Dobol B sa News TV, Joselito Sinocruz, manager of Batangas Port, said the vessel that sank was Ocean Explorer III.
According to the Coast Guard, MV Oceanic Explorer 3 submerged due to bad weather and rough seas in the area, which was 0.5 nautical miles off Keppel Shipyard in Barangay San Roque. “Napakalakas pa po, dito lang po sa loob ng port ay ilan na po yung punong natumba. Meron po akong nakitang tatlong sasakyan na natumbahan po ng puno,” he said.
The identities of the rescued and missing persons were still not available as of press time.
In a separate incident, a roll-in, roll-out vessel ran aground off Bonito Island in Tingloy, Maricaban, Batangas at around 8 a.m. Monday.
The Coast Guard said MV RoRo-12 ran aground due to bad weather and rough sea conditions off Bonito Island.
All five crew members of the vessel took shelter at Bonito Island after the incident while waiting for rescue.
“Personnel of the Coast Guard Sub-Station in Tingloy are now on their way to assist five crew members of said vessel who are taking shelter at Bonito Island while waiting for an MTUG to provide towing assistance,” the Coast Guard said.
Bauan and other areas in the southern portion of Batangas were under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS No. 3) as of Monday morning. (With a report from Betheena Unite)
