DoLE Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns Director Ma. Karen Trayvilla said these workers displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic are from the informal sector.

"We will give bicycles which they can use for business," she said during the Laging Handa press briefing Thursday.

According to Trayvilla, the project was conceptualized because many are now relying on deliveries for their needs since the pandemic started last March.

She said these bicycles will be awarded starting Oct. 26.

"This will start this Monday until Wednesday. There will be a simultaneous broadcast from the DoLE main building in Intramuros," Trayvilla said.

She said the city governments of Mandaluyong, Muntinlupa, Pasig, and Manila and some of their regional offices will also participate in the launching.

"A total of 900 free bikes will be given away by DoLE in the initial implementation of this project," Trayvilla said.

"Perhaps by next month or December we still also hold a similar activity in Cebu and in our other regional office," she added.

The Labor official said the bikes will be distributed by batch so that the rule on  mass gatherings of the Inter-Agency Task Force won’t be violated.

"Here in Intramuros, 256 bikes will be given away...What we will do is it will be by batches of 10 beneficiaries," Trayvilla said.

Contact the DoLE office near you to know more about the project and determine if you are qualified, she said.
