Chile reports decrease in number of new COVID-19 cases


SANTIAGO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chilean Health Minister Enrique Paris said Friday that 13 regions in the country have shown a decrease in the number of new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past week.

He said in a statement that new cases at the national level fell 7 percent in the past seven days and 9 percent in the past 14 days.

Paris also stated that the regions with the highest increase in new cases are Biobio, Los Lagos, Aysen and Tarapaca.

The Ministry of Health reported 1,689 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 488,190.

According to the Department of Statistics and Health Information, in the last 24 hours, another 95 deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 13,529.
