Poet Louise Glück awarded the Nobel Prize in literature

American poet Louise Glück was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature “her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal,” according to the Swedish Academy.

Mats Malm, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, announced Glück’s Nobel in Stockholm on Oct. 8.

The last time an American won a Nobel was in 1993, when novelist Toni Morrison took the prize. Glück is the 16th woman to win the Nobel.
