Number of COVID-19 cases in Eastern Visayas breaches 5,000-mark


TACLOBAN City - After confirming 94 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, the tally in Eastern Visayas has surpassed the 5,000-mark, according to the Department of Health in Region 8 (DOH-8).

Samar province had the most number of cases reported with 52 coming from Calbayog City, 15 from Catbalogan City, and 1 from Jiabong town.

Leyte logged a total of nine cases from Tabon-tabon (3), Alang-alang (1), Albuera (1), Burauen (1), Dulag (1), Hindang (1), and Palo (1).

Southern Leyte had three cases from cases from San Francisco (2), and Maasin City (1).

Based on DOH-8 records, it took more than four months for the region to reach its first, 1,000 COVID-19 cases, took only 17 days to breach the 2,000-mark, and 10 days to reach the 5,000-plateau.

Eastern Visayas has a total of 5,053 active cases, 4,321 or 85.51 percent recoveries with 49 deaths. This brings the total of active cases to 683 or 13.52 percent.

Samar province has imposed a two-week moratorium on the acceptance of locally stranded individuals LSIs), while Tacloban City remains under general community quarantine (GCQ) due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.
