Bishops, religious urge PET to dismiss Marcos protest vs. Robredo

The Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines (AMRSP) and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines- Episcopal Commission on Lay Apostolate (CBCP-ECLA LAIKO) on Wednesday appealed to the Supreme Court to dismiss with finality the election protest of Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. against Vice President Leni Robredo.

"The AMRSP and the CBCP-ECLA LAIKO jointly appeals and strongly urges the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), to justly and decisively dismiss with finality the election protests of Mr. Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. against Vice President Leni Robredo," they said in a joint statement.

The AMRSP and CBCP ECLA encouraged the country's highest magistrates to "model true fairness and pronounce courageously the rule of justice even in the midst of tremendous pressures from powers that be."

"We look up to Your Honors and continue to hope that Truth, Justice and Accountability will guide your decisions," read the statement.

The AMRSP and CBCP ECLA also expressed hope that the PET will not allow "any person to be disadvantaged due to technical delays nor political maneuverings for the sake of our people."

"Dismiss the protest your honors!" the statement read.

The statement was jointly signed by CBCP ECLA chairman Bishop Broderick Pabillo, AMRSP Co-Chairpersons Fr. Cielito Almazan and Sr. Marilyn Java, and Laiko president Bro. Rouquel Ponte.

Last month, the SC directed the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to comment on certain issues related to the election protest, in particular the annulment of elections on the ground of terrorism, intimidation, harassment of voters, and pre-shading of ballots in the provinces of Lanao Del Sur, Basilan, and Maguindanao.
