4.7 quake hits off Calayan Island


A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hit the waters off Calayan Island in Cagayan on Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its latest earthquake bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter of the offshore quake was traced 49 kilometers northeast of Calayan, one of the four major islands comprising the Babuyan Islands.

The tremor, which occurred at 8:49 a.m., had a depth of 15 kilometers and was tectonic in origin which was caused by ground shaking primarily due to the sudden movement in the Earth's plates, Phivolcs added.

The state seismology bureau said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the tremor, while aftershocks are also not expected.
