5.1-magnitude quake jolts Surigao del Sur anew


BUTUAN CITY - A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit Surigao del Sur province on Thursday morning, September 24, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor was recorded at 6:19 a.m.

The epicenter was plotted 99 kilometers (kms) northeast of Bayabas  town, Surigao del Sur province, with a depth of 24 kms.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin, and was an aftershock of a magnitude-5.7 earthquake that struck Bayabas, Surigao Del Sur last September 21.

The regional office of the Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga) Office of Civil Defense (OCD) here and the Surigao del Sur provincial disaster risk reduction and management council (PDRRMC) reported no damage or injury.

Meanwhile,  a 4.6-magnitude earthquake also hit Davao Occidental province at 6:07 a.m.

The epicenter was plotted 438 kilometers (kms) southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental province, with a depth of 30 kms, Phivolcs said.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and no aftershock or tsunami alert was raised by the state agency.

The regional office of the Southern Mindanao Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Davao Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported no damage or injury.
