ILIGAN CITY – A New People’s Army (NPA) terrorist was killed, while four high-powered firearms were captured, after a clash between insurgents and soldiers from the 53rd Infantry Battalion (53rd IB) in Barangay Marangan, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur, on Monday, September 21.

Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera, 53rd IB commander, identified the slain NPA member as Bernie Nunez, also known as Gogo and a member of the Main Regional Guerilla Unit (MRGU) of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC).

Recovered after the firefight, which started at 10:30 a.m., were two M-16 rifles, an M203 grenade launcher, and an AK-47 assault rifle.

The military operation was part of Dumingag town’s counter-insurgency action plan that was dubbed “Oplan Amuma”.

Last August, the municipality launched the plan to address insurgency and terrorism because the town has long been regarded as a safe haven for NPAs.
