N. Cotabato gov’t starts distributing radios in remote areas

DAVAO CITY – With just about two weeks left before the opening of the school year under the new normal, the Office of the Vice Governor of North Cotabato has started to distribute transistor radios to students living in far-flung communities.

This was disclosed by North Cotabato Vice Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza, who said that at least 3,000 units have been prepared in support of the learners and teachers, who will be using blended learning modalities when classes resume on October 5.

“Radio broadcasting of some lessons is being considered. That’s why we come up with this initiative by providing transistor radios to the far-flung barangays with access to radio frequencies,” Mendoza told Manila Bulletin.

Since the transistor radios are limited, Matalam town Councilor Ralph Ryan Rafael said it was now up to the teachers on how to distribute the units among the learners. “The learners may be clustered to be able to share the usage of radio among them,” he said.

Rafael said that, in his hometown alone, 170 units have been allocated for the schools situated in the remote areas.

He added that the distribution of transistor radio was still ongoing.

In its memorandum issued on September 15 posted on its Facebook page, “the Schools Division of Cotabato shall adopt the utilization of audio and video lessons for Radio-Based Instructions (RBI) and Television-Based Instruction effective School Year 2020-2021 which starts on October 5.”

The memorandum, which was issued by Division Superintendent Isagani Dela Cruz,  added that the RBI and TBI are to be blended the modular distance learning (MDL) being the main modality to deliver basic education.

Moreover, the lessons will be broadcast in the division-owned radio station dxGO 103.1 FM and with other local radio and cable television channels.
