Duterte appoints lawyer as new Comelec commissioner

Malacañang is optimistic that incoming Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Michael Braganza Peloton will help ensure clean, credible and modernized elections in the country.

Peloton, a lawyer, has been nominated by President Duterte as Commissioner of the constitutional body, according to Presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

"We are confident that Mr. Peloton would serve the Commission with professionalism and integrity in the conduct of clean, credible, free, honest, orderly and modernized elections," he said.

"We congratulate Mr. Peloton and wish him all the best in his new assignment,” he added.

Early in the day, Comelec chief Sheriff Abas announced the nomination of Peloton as new poll commissioner, saying that he is a "timely addition" to the body. He cited that Peloton's vast experience in law and information technology would contribute to the Comelec's efforts to further improve and revolutionize the country's electoral process.

Based on the nomination letter sent by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Peloton will take the place of Luie Tito Guia, who retired from Comelec early this year. He will serve a term until February 2, 2027.

Peloton’s appointment  must still be confirmed by the Commission on Appointments (CA) before he can be sworn into office. The nomination letter was signed by the President on Sept. 17.
