DepEd eyes Guinness World Record for highest number of TV episodes produced

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday announced that it might apply for a Guinness World Record for producing an “unprecedented number” of television episodes to be shown in its very own channel.

DepEd Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS) Director Abram Abanil, during the virtual “Handang Isip, Handa Bukas” press briefing said DepEd is aiming to create its own record on the number of TV episodes produced in a short span of time.

“Until now, there is no group worldwide that was able to produce 130 videos in this short span of time,” Abanil said in a mix of English and Filipino. “In one month’s time, we will produce 130 TV episodes for our youth and this is not only for the Oct. 5 school opening because it will be done every week,” he added.

Abanil said that with the 130 TV episodes produced per week, over 500 videos will be produced in a month. “This volume of production for television was never done before, so we’re planning to arrange and apply for a Guinness Record once we have produced our target number of episodes,” he added.

Two weeks before the School Year (SY) 2020-2021 opening on Oct. 5, Abanil said that the production of educational episodes to be shown in DepEd TV is currently in full swing.

Under the distance/blended approach, various alternative learning delivery modalities will be implemented. Aside from the modular learning (both printed and offline), lessons will be delivered to the students via online learning or television and radio-based instruction.

Citing a 2019 survey, Abanil noted that 88% of Philippine households have access to television. The airing of episodes in DepEd TV also aims to complement the modules containing the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) effective this school year.
