CHR denies coddling rape suspects

The Commission on Human Rights has denied a Twitter post alleging that they are coddling rape suspects.

"The CHR does not protect nor defend individuals accused or convicted of any crime. As the national human rights institution, we are mandated to look into cases of human rights violations, especially those involving members of the vulnerable sectors," the CHR said in a social media post.

"As the Gender Ombud in the country, we call out and investigate any form of violence and other human rights violations against women and girls," it added.

The Twitter post compared the punishment of the crime of rape in the Philippines to five other countries in Asia that have the death penalty.

"Ipinapahiwatig ng post na ‘di umano’y walang kapanagutan ang rape sa Pilipinas at pinoprotektahan ‘di umano ng CHR ang mga may sala. Wala itong katotohanan! (The post suggests that the crime of rape has no culpability in the Philippines and that the CHR is protecting those who are at fault)," the CHR said.

The CHR also said they provide financial assistance to victims of abuse.
