AWOL cop shot dead in Cebu City

CEBU CITY – A policeman who had gone absent without official leave (AWOL) was killed in an ambush Thursday morning in Barangay Tisa here.

Police identified the fatality as Ruben Requinto Quita, 48.

Quita was driving a Toyota Revo when four men aboard separate motorcycles opened fire at his vehicles.

Quita had three passengers, including his 19-year-old son and his eight-year-old grandson.

Quita died on the spot, while his son was taken to a hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds in the body, said Police Capt. Jonathan Dela Cerna, chief of the Labangon Police Station.

Dela Cerna said Quita went AWOL in 2016.

“Personal grudges or work-related could be the motive of the attack,” said Dela Cerna.

Quita was a former operative of the Police Regional Office Central Visayas. He had a rank of Police Officer 3 when he and 28 other police officers were transferred to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in 2016.
