3,637 new COVID cases push PH total 213,131

The Philippines has logged 3,637 additional COVID-19 cases with 94 new deaths, the Department of Health (DoH) reported Saturday.

The new cases pushed the country’s caseload to 213,131, of which 74,611 are active cases. Of the active cases, 91.3 percent are mild, 6.7 percent are asymptomatic, 0.8 percent are severe, and 1.1 percent are in critical condition.

The Health department also reported that the death toll count increased to 3,419 with 94 new fatalities. For four straight days, the DoH reported more than 90 deaths daily.

Of the new deaths reported Saturday, 81 occurred in August, 12 in July, and one in June, the DoH noted.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that the country’s “case fatality rate today is 1.5 percent.”

“Ang ating bilang ng mga pumanaw, malungkot po ako, malungkot po tayong lahat -- sana walang pumpapanaw pero hindi naman maiwasan ito, lalo na po 'yung may comorbidites o may kaakibat na sakit, matatandang mamamayan, sila po ang vulnerable o nabibiktima (The number of those who died, it’s saddening. I hope there will be no deaths but it is inevitable especially those with comorbidities and elderly people -- they are the vulnerable),” said Duque during a dialogue with officials of Quezon City.

The DoH reported 655 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 135,101.

Duque said that the country’s medical workers have been able to improve their knowledge in managing COVID-19 patients.

“Sa dumaan na panahon, tatlo, apat na buwan -- gumaling ang ating mga doktor, ang ating mga nurses sa kanilang clinical case management ng mga COVID-19 cases. Kaya marami pong buhay ang nasasalba (In the past three (or) four months -- our doctors and nurses have been able to improve their clinical case management of COVID-19 cases. So many lives are being saved), he said.
