Crisis should bring out the best in all of us – Bishop Ramirez

The head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Health Care said the current health crisis brought about by the coronavirus pandemic should encourage the best and not the worse in us.

This was the message of Bishop Rex Ramirez in his August 24 circular letter addressed to bishops.

"We cannot allow this current health crisis to encourage the worse in us, Filipinos," he said.

The Naval prelate said the fear and suffering, the anxiety and uncertainty we experience today is brought about not just by this new coronavirus, but also by the old social virus of "selfishness and corruption."

Ramirez added:"The harm these do to our people and our country is immeasurable."

The CBCP official then urged the faithful to stand with those who spend their best efforts for the wholistic betterment of our communities, our country and ourselves as "health" is not just about physical well-being.

In order to help propagate a culture characterized by mutual respect, accountability, patience, and hope, the CBCP-ECHC in collaboration with the Episcopal Commission on Youth and Episcopal Commission on Social Communications will launch on August 31 the "Yakapin ang Bagong Bukas" advocacy online.

"Let us be encouraged through inter-faith prayer and this inspirational video," said Ramirez.

The CBCP ECHC also called for a simultaneous ringing of church bells at 6 P.M. on the said day to "signal our unity and call for a collective effort in these trying times."

The circular letter was endorsed by Kalookan Bishop Pablo David, acting CBCP president.
