Another day, another 2,965 spike in COVID-19 cases


The country saw another spike in its coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases as close to 3,000 new infections were confirmed on Tuesday, August 25.

The Philippines’ current figure stands at 197,164 as the Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,965 new cases.  

The DOH said there are 61,730 active cases nationwide.  It was noted that 91.6 percent of the active cases are mild, 6.1 percent are asymptomatic, 0.9 percent are severe cases, and 1.4 percent are in critical condition.

There were also 34 more fatalities,  pushing the death toll to 3,038. The DOH noted that of the new deaths, 26 happened this month, seven in July, and one in June. 

Meanwhile, recoveries  increased by 368 to 132,396, the DOH reported in its latest case bulletin.

Metro Manila had the most number of new cases at 1,575, followed by Negros Occidetal with 237 cases, Laguna with 151, Cavite with 129, and Batangas with 95, the DOH said.

The DOH said that as of Aug. 24, a total of 2,207,267 individuals have been tested for COVID-19 nationwide. 

The Philippines still has the highest number of total cases among the 10-member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Meanwhile, the country ranked 22nd with the most number of cases globally, as shown in the COVID-19 dashboard of the World Health Organization.
