Bishop calls on youth to play a more active role amid the pandemic

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Youth has called on the young generation “to play a more active role in their communities amid the pandemic.”

CBCP-ECY chairman Daet Bishop Rex Andrew Alarcon said the health crisis in the country calls for a more active participation of the youth in their the church now that the senior citizens are discouraged from leaving their homes for safety purposes.

“We at CBCP-ECY join the call for young people to be engaged, to resist differences, to go beyond oneself, to be engaged in the barangay and the community. The COVID-19 pandemic situation calls upon the young because the elderly are restricted in their homes and so are the small children. The youth are called to be actors in the community, society, and the church,” Bishop Alarcon said over Church-run Radio Veritas.

“The ball is in the hands of the young people,” added the Bishop.

The Church leader said, the theme of the United Nations for the International Youth Day 2020 “Youth Engagement for Global Action” is very timely as it emphasizes the important role of the youth in the society and in the world.

“It also highlights the opportunity for the youth to be missionaries, in helping spread the Good News to others,” Alarcon said.

“We need the active participation of more young people. I call on the youth to make a difference. Be missionary disciples. The Church is in need of young missionaries. Pope Francis calls for young missionary disciples in this age of networking. Let us work together. Let us bond together for the much-needed socio-political transformation,” Alarcon added.
