Origin stories: Shell

Shell is probably one of the most recognized energy companies in the world, most likely due to its very recognizable logo.

The shell represents, Royal Dutch Shell plc, commonly known as Shell. It is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands and with its registered office at the Shell Centre in London, United Kingdom.

The original company was founded by Marcus Samuel, and was called, Marcus Samuel and Company. They would import kerosene into India through a Mr. Graham, and it would be sold as ‘Graham’s Oil.’ When the canisters were sent back, they would be filled with shells, to be sold as decorative items in the West.

The success of the kerosene and shell trading business led Samuel to name his tankers after different seashells. It wasn’t long before the simple shell used to fill up empty canisters going back to the Netherlands were adopted as the company logo.
