The vessel, identified as MV Globe 6, ran aground in the waters between Nagubat Island and Liwagao Island in Antique, the Coast Guard added.

According to the ship’s skipper, Captain Nguyen Hoai, the officer on watch fell asleep during his duty resulting in the accident.

MV Globe 6, which was manned by 25 crew members, was on its way to Davao City from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to deliver rice cargo when the incident occurred.

A team from the Philippine Coast Guard onboard BRP Cape Engano has visited the incident site to inspect for possible oil spill.

The team was also deployed to conduct initial inquiry on the actual cause of the incident.

Coast Guard divers were later dispatched in the area to check the hull of the vessel, which sustained the impact of the incident, Commodore Armand Balilo, Coast Guard spokesman, said.
