Three seamen die of suffocation while cleaning ship oil tank in Batangas


Three crewmen of a ship temporarily anchored off the waters of Calaca, Batangas died of suffocation while cleaning the oil tank on Monday, police said.

The victims were identified as Enrique Jay Gaspado, 24, deck cadet seaman from Valenzuela City; John Rey Illustrisimo, 22, of Palawan; and, Ryan Jay Bantilan, 25, of Eastern Samar.

A report reaching Camp Crame disclosed that the three were found unconscious at the empty cargo oil tank of the Motor Tankern Andina 200 which was anchored off the waters of Calaca. They were believed to have been suffocated while cleaning the tank at round 10 a.m. on Monday.

“The gas odor and low oxygen supply inside probably caused the suffocation of the victims,” the report read.

The three were taken to the Ospital ng Calaca where they were declared dead on arrival.
