Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner: A tale of two houses

Social media world weighs in with approvals, dislikes, and mixed reactions

Two models with two houses. Two doors that opened to the prying eyes of the world. Who reigns supreme? Social media weighs in.

Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner have made a name for themselves by walking down the runway for major fashion labels, representing multiple brands, and working on various fashion and beauty collaborations.

When it comes to home design, though, some netizens are convinced that only one half of the modeling duo is ready to go into home design.

Gigi recently shared photos online of her redecorated apartment in New York City, which she says had her spend “all of last year designing and curating” what she calls her “passion project” or “dream spot.”

The space, described as Bohemian-inspired, features the 25-year-old’s eclectic design choices, including rooms with bright and bold accents, a predominantly marble bathroom covered in old New Yorker magazine covers, a kitchen with the now-viral glass cabinet drawers that reveal colourful dyed pasta, and an “inexplicable” bowl of billiard balls, as well as an enormous sculpture of a yellow pen.

“It all came together right before quarantining out of the city, but I’m excited for the time I’ll get to spend enjoying all the special corners that were made with a little help from some of my favorite creatives who embraced my ideas and didn’t call me crazy,” she adds in her post, referring to architect Gordon Kahn, as well as her mom, Yolanda Hadid.

Some netizens, in the Twittersphere, did not hold back, sharing their thoughts about the model’s New York abode.

“There is something unspeakably terrifying about those pool balls sitting there in the kitchen,” a Twitter user by the name Amy Van Gar tweets.

Another tweet has also pointed out that pasta decor. “I want to know. What’s up with all that pasta?” a tweet from Chelsea Merrill questions.

Another tweet says the space exudes “expensive hostel vibes,” while another tweet goes as far as saying that “money really cannot buy taste.”

On the flip side of the reaction to Gigi’s apartment was the online praise garnered by her best friend, Kendall.

The 24-year-old model, who is part of the famous Kardashian clan, recently graced the cover of Architectural Digest, where she gave a tour of her Los Angeles home.

Her Mediterranean-style house features a cozy home aesthetic of organic textures, period pieces, and earthy tones, as well as pops of color such as the teal in her kitchen.

“I’m really proud of what we accomplished here. This is the first home I’ve done completely, and I think it’s a genuine reflection of who I am and what I like,” Kendall says. “In the end, I’m still a young female in L.A., just trying to have some fun.”

It also showcases the model’s impressive collection of contemporary art, including a signature wall sculpture by James Turrel at the entryway.

“I’ve always been a huge Turrell fan. I was introduced to his work by (my brother-in-law) Kanye (West), who collaborates with him,” Kendall says in the magazine article. I wanted this piece to be a focal point of the house, and I’m so hyped to have it here.”

Followers of the publication have expressed their adoration for the space in the model’s video tour on YouTube.

“Her home is so cozy,” a commenter by the name Chaira Erica Sibuyo writes. “She puts a lot of characters in it.”

Another netizen says she loves Kendall’s style, noting that she has a “refined taste” and “the decor is everything.”

“Kendall’s personality and unique taste emanate throughout this house,” a netizen by the name Matti Chua says. “All the rooms are used and loved (and) not just for show. I love it!”

So who slays in the interior design runway? Netizens crown Kendall as the winner, but gave props to Gigi who “showed her eccentric personality.”
