Manhunt on for 5 escapees from Calbayog City jail


TACLOBAN City - A manhunt operation has been launched by authorities for the arrest of five of eight escapees from Calbayog City Jail in Calbayog City, Samar, on Monday, July 27.

PLtCol. Sam Andarino, Calbayog Police Chief identified the escapees as Milo Ligason, 36; Eron Tomboc, 25; Edgar Elbano, 45; Edar Balantino, 33; Juvy Openiano; Edwin Abria; Eden Albana; and Raul Doroja, 43.

Initial investigation disclosed that the escape was initiated at about 2 p.m., when the duty jail guards SJO1 Manuel Sabio Jr. and JO1 Mark De Guzman were setting the water hose from Calbayog City Water District mobile water tank passing through the main and secondary gate.

The inmates attacked and stabbed the guards, while the others forcibly opened the secondary and main gates.

The inmates escaped towards the mountainous area of the place, but the guards were able to neutralize Balantino in one of the houses fronting the City District Jail.

Abria and Openiano who were climbing the hill were shot at by the guards. Both inmates were brought to Calbayog District Hospital, but Abria was declared dead on arrival, while Openiano is still under medication.
