Chinese national nabbed for selling unregistered medicines in Lapu-Lapu City

CEBU CITY—A Chinese national was arrested for allegedly selling unregistered Chinese medicines in Lapu-Lapu City.

The National Bureau of Investigation Central Visayas (NBI-7) also found out that Ke Liangping was also running a clinic in his home in Teakwood Subdivision, Barangay Soong, Lapu-Lapu.

NBI-7 Director Tomas Enrile said Lianping was arrested in a buy-bust operation at his home in Soong last Friday, July 24.

Enrile said that the suspect’s house also had several hospital beds.

“He is really popular among local Chinese. Most of the habitants in the subdivision are Chinese. In fact, during the operation, he had one patient with intravenous attached to her arm,” said Enrile.

Also during the operation, a Chinese national called the suspect to set an appointment for an acupuncture treatment.

Enrile said they started monitoring the Chinese after receiving reports that he was selling Chinese medicines, and was running a clinic in his home.

In coordination with the Lapu-Lapu police and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a buy-bust operation was conducted, Enrile said.

“He introduced himself as a medical doctor in China, but he could not present documents proving that he is a doctor,” said Enrile.

The suspect also failed to present documents that the medicines found in his home were registered with FDA.

Enrile said that according to FDA, the seized medicines with Chinese labels were worth P10 million.

Some of the seized items were medicines purportedly for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), according to Enrile.
