12,000 to join SONAgKAISA rally at UP Diliman today

Around 12,000 are expected to join the SONAgKAISA rally at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman today, an official of the university said.

Dr. Aleli Bawagan, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs of UP Diliman, said the SONAgKaisa rally will be much bigger than the June 12 “Mañanita,” as around 90 organizations from different sectors will come together for the protest.

Bawagan said Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), Tindig Pilipinas, Movement Against Tyranny, Sanlakas, are among the groups which will join the protest.

“Malaking grupo po itong inaasahan natin, mas malaki kaysa sa June 12 (We’re expecting a huge group of protesters, even bigger than the number of participants in the June 12 protest),” Bawagan told DZMM Monday.

Bawagan said protesters have also agreed to observe health protocols such as social distancing during the event.

The UP official said members of the Quezon City police were manning the vicinity of the campus since Sunday night, but said that they are not allowed to enter the university premises.

“Tinatanong nga po ng organizers kung bakit andoon sila. Well, ‘to practice security’ daw, ang sabi naman nila ay di sila manghaharang ng mga rallyista (The organizers actually asked why there were policemen in the area. Well, according to the police officers, they just want to ‘practice security’ and vowed not to stop protestors),” she said.
