5.2-magnitude quake hits Davao del Sur


BUTUAN CITY - The Philippine Institute Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a magnitude 5.2 earthquake in Davao del Sur on early Saturday morning, July 11.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor was recorded at 2:16 a.m.

The epicenter was plotted 11 kilometers (kms) southeast of Kiblawan town, Davao del Sur province.

The earthquake had a depth of 19 kms from the surface.

Intensity V was recorded in the towns of Bansalan and Magsaysay, both of Davao del Sur province.

In its instrumental Intensities, Phivolcs also registered Intensity IV in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Tupi, South Cotabato; and Malungon, Sarangani while Intensity II in Alabel, Sarangani; and General Santos City; and Intensity I in Kiamba, Sarangani.

Phivolcs said it was not expecting damage but aftershocks were possible.

The regional office of the Southern Mindanao Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Davao del Sur provincial disaster risk reduction and management council (PDRRMC) there reported no damage or injury. 

On Friday, a 4.7-magnitude tectonic earthquake was also registered at 2:51 a.m., and its epicenter traced three kms southwest of the same town and province, with a depth of only 12 kms, Phivolcs also reported, in its advisory.

The OCD in that region and PDRRMC of that same province reported no damage or injury.
