BOC intercepts P32.7 million misdeclared cigarettes at MICP

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has foiled the passage of P32.7 million worth of misdeclared cigarettes at the Import Exit Gate (IEG) of the Manila International Container Port (MICP) last July 2.

The seizure of the illegal goods is the result of the joint efforts of the BOC-Enforcement Security Service (ESS), Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS), and the MICP.

In a statement, the BOC said the shipment was intercepted by ESS personnel because allegedly, it has not undergone proper examination in accordance with procedure.

Prior, on July 2, the container was inspected by the custom’s inspection unit and was declared to contain SH brand of non-woven bags.

But apparently, the package contains 1,092 master cases of D&B cigarettes.

The BOC added three alleged officials of the customs brokers group also attempted to negotiate for the release of the said container even questioning the inspection made on the shipment.

The inspectors, however, insisted it was properly conducted as covered by a memorandum signed by the Customs Commissioner last April 27 in relation to the inspection of imported shipments during a public health emergency or the imposition of the enhanced community quarantine.

“Considering this incident, the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) - MICP will issue appropriate subpoena against the responsible officers of the consignee, its nominated brokers and other accessories, to provide necessary information relative to the subject shipment. Also, the CIIS will conduct strict monitoring on other shipments of the consignee, including shipments transacted by the nominated brokers,” the BOC said.

According to the law, any person who has engaged in a fraudulent import or involved in the concealment of such goods will face penalties under the Republic Act 10863 or the “Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).
