Army laments brutal killing of soldier

TACLOBAN City – In what it called was a “satanic attack”, the Army’s Eighth Infantry Division (8th ID) has condemned the brutal killing of a soldier and wounding of another by suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Monday, July 6, in Barangay Canvais, Motiong, Samar.

Capt. Reynaldo Aragones, 8th ID Public Affairs Officers disclosed that the two soldiers were onboard two motorcycles to coordinate with a local government unit (LGU) the conduct of programs and projects at around 7 a.m., Monday, when they were fired upon by at least 10 suspected NPA fighters.

The wounded soldier narrated that they were about 300 to 400 meters from Barangay Canvais, and were heading to the town proper when his companion was immediately felled by a barrage of gunshots.

He left his motorcycle to look for cover, and go back to the team which was conducting a Retooled Community Support Program for reinforcement. In his rush, he no longer realized that he was also hit in the leg.

However, the team was also fired upon in the village proper.

The slain soldier's body was burned together with his motorcycle, and hacked by a long-bladed weapon (bolo) on his head, prompting Aragones to say that it was a "satanic" attack.

"Wala na 'yung idelohiya na sinasabi nila. Hindi makatao ang ginawa nila," Aragones lamented.
