DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said the COVID-19 situation in Region 8, particularly in Leyte, has been managed well by local government units (LGUs).

Año said the Leyte provincial government has already requested to suspend arrivals of locally stranded individuals (LSIs) for 14 days.

“Pinapatapos nila iyong quarantine ng mga nauna dahil sa ngayon wala silang paglalagyan. Ayaw naman nila i-home quarantine kasi di sila sigurado kasi minsan pag home quarantine vina-violate minsan ang protocols (They are waiting for the first batch of LSIs to finish the quarantine since they don't have enough space in their quarantine facilities. They don’t want the LSIs to undergo home quarantine since protocols are sometimes violated in such setup),” Ano said.

Año said the increase in COVID-19 cases in Leyte was due to the LSIs who arrived without coordination with the LGU and went straight to their homes.

As of June 25, Año said Leyte has recorded 431 cases, a total of 392 of them active cases.
