Palo, Leyte cancels ‘Pamalandong’ due to COVID-19

PALO, Leyte - The 46th year reenactment of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ in this town this coming Good Friday has been cancelled due to the threats posed by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a report from the office of the mayor said here Monday, April 6.

Palo Mayor Frances Ann B. Petilla told reporters that the 46th year reenactment of the passion and death of Jesus Christ on the cross dubbed “Pamalandong” in the local dialect, which is regularly held every Good Friday has been cancelled.

Petilla said that it will be the first time that the“Pamalandong” will be cancelled.

Petilla noted that the “Pamalandong” was one of the country’s oldest presentation on the passion and death of Jesus Christ, and was staged annually at the Palo Cathedral grounds on Good Friday.

She added that the reenactment attracts thousands of people from the provinces of Leyte and Samar including foreign tourists as it is considered to be most popular live presentation of the passion and death of Jesus Christ in Eastern Visayas.
