The mother of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is grateful for the appointment of her son to a Vatican post, but said she is also sad because the cardinal will be staying in Rome.

"It’s a great honor also, at least … what he has done for the church is recognized now. And for that, I am very thankful," Milagros Tagle said in an interview on the sidelines of the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization on Wednesday at Smart Araneta in Quezon City.

"But I am also very sad that he will be away from us. Meaning to say, he will be staying in Rome or wherever," she said.

"I have only two sons...So we’re very thankful and very grateful for all the benefits, but we are very sad. We’d rather have him with us."

Her message to her son is simple: "Take care of yourself because you will be quite far from us."

Cardinal Tagle was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples by Pope Francis last December. He will soon leave the country to assume his post.
