A police colonel assigned at the Internal Affairs Service of the Philippine National Police (PNP) was shot dead in Cebu City.

Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon, director of the Central Visayas regional police, said Col Joie Yape died while being treated in a hospital.

Yape was reportedly assigned at the IAS main office at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

IAS is tasked to investigate wrongdoings of policemen.

The incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

De Leon said Yape was walking with his wife along Molave Street when a motorcycle suddenly stopped near them at the vicinity of a hotel in the area.

One of the riders then pulled out a gun and shot him at close range.

The motorcycle sped off after the shooting.

De Leon said he had already ordered a thorough investigation of the case to determine the motive and to identify the perpetrators.
