Four 'akyat bahay' thieves nabbed in QC

Four alleged "akyat bahay" thieves were nabbed by the police hours after stealing cash and valuables inside a house in Quezon City on Wednesday.

Arrested during a follow-up operation were suspects, Joseph Reyes, 19, and Jimro Hafalla, 21, Jomar Esguerra, 28, and Arnold Bayotas, 26, all residents of Barangay Batasan Hills.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Romulus Gadaoni, chief of Quezon City Police District's Batasan Police Station (PS-6), said the men's arrest stemmed from a complaint of victim Kharl Sumagaysay, 21, who reported the robbery incident.

The initial report from PS-6 showed that the suspects sneaked into the house of Sumagaysay on Resolution Extension, Talanay Area C in Barangay Batasan Hills at about 2:30 a.m, Wednesday, and stole several valuables and cash.

According to Sumagaysay, he was awakened by the creeping sound of the suspects but he pretended to be asleep for fear of being hurt or killed.

When the suspects left, Sumagaysay immediately sought help from barangay authorities who eventually reported the incident to officers of nearby police community precinct of PS-6.

Authorities received a tip from a concerned citizen that the suspects were hiding inside a house at Alton Street also in Barangay Batasan Hills.

A follow-up operation was conducted at about 11:30 a.m., or at least nine hours after the incident, which resulted in the arrest of the four men.

Sumagaysay positively identified the arrested suspects as the ones who entered his house and stole two mobile phones, jewelry, a wallet containing P17,500 cash and a bag with several identification cards.

Four sachets of dried marijuana leaves were confiscated from the suspects while several identification cards of the victim were also recovered from them.

The arrested men are now under police custody and will be facing charges for robbery as well as illegal drug cases.

Police said the group has been involved in several other "akyat bahay" incidents in the area.

The QCPD also encouraged other victims of the group to surface and file charges against the suspects. (Alexandria San Juan)
