The Department of Tourism (DOT) said that the Battle of Surigao Strait Memorial and Museum in Surigao City, which was recently unveiled, will serve as a major tourist attraction in the area.

"The memorial museum is but an addition to the plethora of visitor destinations in Caraga (Region 13), known for Siargao Island, the Enchanted River, Tinuy-an Falls, Mabua Pebble Beach, Silop Caves, Britania Island, Day Asan Floating Village, hot and cold springs, dive sites, and many farm resorts," said Tourism Assistant Secretary Myra Paz Abubakar in a statement.

The DOT said that the landmark will also serve as a symbol of peace, as dignitaries from the United States, Australia, Japan, as well as Philippine officials renewed their commitment to world peace during the unveiling ceremony of the memorial museum; which was "in stark contrast to the events of October 24 to 25, 1944," or during the time of the Second World War.

"The erection of the Battle of Surigao Strait Memorial and Museum will certainly serve as a beacon to the world to come get a glimpse of the acclaimed greatest sea battle of all time and now a monumental symbol of peace--a truly meaningful tour experience for visitors," said Abubakar.

The battles that happened in the area during the Second World War "serve as the tapestry of naval service," said US Embassy Naval Attache Col. Brian Clark.

"The events that took place in the pristine waters of Surigao Strait remain as relevant as ever as the partnership of nations must face the challenges of keeping open lines of navigation for international trade and uphold the rule of law of the sea," said Clark.
