PH wizards win in 3 China math contests

Young Filipino students again brought honor to the country by winning in three math contests in China.

The students bagged 1 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals at the 19th China Western Mathematics Invitational (CWMI), 18th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) and 16th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO), according to the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

“These Chinese math contests are very hard and we congratulate our Filipino students for their triumph,” said Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG president.

The Philippines won four medals at CWMI, which was held from Aug. 11 to 16 in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, China.

Winning medals were Immanuel Josiah Balete, St. Stephen’s High School, gold medal; William Joshua King, the University of San Carlos in Cebu, silver medal; Charles Justin Shi, Philippine Cultural College Caloocan, silver medal; and Fedrick Lance Lim, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, bronze medal.

Team leader Renard Eric Chua said participating teams came from different provinces in Mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, and Kazakhstan.

On the other hand, the four-member Philippine team won 2 silver and 2 bronze medals at the all-female math contest CGMO, held from Aug. 10 to 15 in  Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.

They were Vanessa Ryanne Julio, St. Jude Catholic School, silver medal; Gwyneth Margaux Tangog, Southville International School and Colleges, silver medal; Deanne Gabrielle Algenio, Makati Science High School, bronze medal; and Hiraya Marcos, Philippine Cultural College-Main, bronze medal. They were accompanied by team leader Winsdy Marcos.

The competing teams came from different provinces in Mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, and Russia.

At the 16th CSMO, held from July 28 to Aug. 2 in Ji’an City, Jiangxi Province, China, three medals were won by Filipino students.

Bagging bronze medals were Charles Justin Shi, Philippine Cultural College-Caloocan; Issam Wang, Manila Science High School; and Stephen James Ty, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

The Philippine team was headed by team leader Kerish Villegas and other participating teams came from different provinces in Mainland China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Indonesia, and Taiwan.
