2 nabbed for driving van with undocumented lumber

TACLOBAN City – Two persons were nabbed, while some 3,000 board ft. of undocumented dipterocarp lumber on board a 10-wheeler van was seized in this city Thursday morning.

The joint team of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR 8) Enforcement Division, PNP Tacloban and Naval Forces Central intercepted the vehicle containing freshly cut red Lauan lumbers and conveyance, with an estimated value of P1.3 million along Maharlika Highway, Brgy. 110 Utap.

An official from DENR 8 disclosed that they received intelligence reports regarding the shipment of said lumber coming from Marabut, Samar, an identified logging hotspot in Eastern Visayas, which prompted them to conduct said anti-illegal logging operation.

The suspects were identified as Ruel Quizon, 34, driver, and Melvin Macapanas, 18, helper, both residents of Coreville, Brgy. 106 Sto. Niño, were brought to Abucay Police Station for inquest proceedings.
