4.4 magnitude tectonic quake jolts Davao, Surigao

BUTUAN CITY - Two earthquakes described as moderately strong struck Davao Oriental and Surigao del Sur provinces early Thursday morning but did not inflict any damage to properly or cause injury.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in its bulletin said a 4.4 magnitude quake was recorded at 3:05 a.m. Thursday with epicenter at 90 kilometers southeast of Tarragona, Davao Oriental province. It had a depth of 79 km, it said.

Earlier, a tremor of the same magnitude was felt at 2:04 a.m. 84 km northeast of Marihatag town, Surigao del Sur province. The earthquake had a depth of 16 km.

The two tremors were tectonic in origin.
