Nassa elected to Caritas International council

The National Secretariat for Social Action/Caritas Philippines (Nassa), the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has been elected to the Representative Council (RepCo) of the Caritas Internationalis (Caritas International).

Nassa was elected along with its Korean counterpart to represent Asia to the council of the global confederation of Catholic charities.

Nassa executive secretary Rev. Fr. Edwin Gariguez will sit as its representative to the RepCo. The election took place during the recent Caritas Asia Regional Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand.

The RepCo is the highest governing body of Caritas Internationalis, the social action arm of the Roman Catholic Church which is headed by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle as president.

The gathering also elected the new leaders of Caritas Asia led by its president Dr. Benedict D’Rozario of Bangladesh. New Regional Commission members were also elected including Fr. Gariguez and leaders from Caritas Mongolia, Caritas Nepal, and Caritas Korea.

The Caritas Asia Regional Commission is the advisory and executive body that works with the president in coordinating the activities and plans for Asia and in carrying out the decisions of the Regional Conference.
