CEBU CITY – An off-duty policeman was at the right time and the right place after he was able to subdue and neutralize a man who tried to stage a hold-up inside a passenger jeepney in Barangay Ermita here, Sunday night.

PO3 Nemesio Dinopol was in civilian clothes and was seated in the front passenger seat when suspect Hygie Mendez Mambiar announced the holdup at around 8 p.m.

Police said that when the jeepney reached an intersection, Mambiar drew a gun and shouted “ambi na inyong cellphone, pamusilon ta mo! (give me your cellphones or I will shoot you!)”

The man was starting to take the cellphones and other belongings of the passengers when Dinopol introduced himself as a policeman.

Police said that instead of surrendering, Mambiar pointed his gun at Dinopol, who was prompted to open fire.
A wounded Mambiar hurriedly got off the jeepney but slumped on the ground a few meters away.

Police seized from Mambiar two cellphones and a homemade 9mm revolver with three bullets in the cylinder.
